National Geographic was founded in Washington, D.C. on January 13, 1888, by a group of 33 men with a common passion for exploration and discovery. Among them were John Wesley Powell, the one-armed Civil War veteran who had led the first expedition down the Colorado River; Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone; and railroad magnate Edward Harriman.
Since its inception, National Geographic has been at the forefront of global exploration and discovery, funding more than 10,000 research projects in over 200 countries. From the depths of the oceans to the highest mountains, from the Arctic to the African plains, National Geographic explorers have helped reveal some of the world’s most amazing places and creatures.
